The P.A.L. workshop series helps parents of accelerated learners understand important topics relevant to their child’s cognitive, social & emotional development. Experts and practitioners in the field of gifted and talented education and parent advocates will join our panels for a dialogue with you about educating and nurturing these unique learners. The workshop series was launched in Spring 2011.
Workshop/Mini Session: How To Talk To Your Children About…Mathematics* (*Without Driving Each Other Crazy!)
Parents, does it seem as if your child speaks a different mathematical language than you remember learning? Why did the word “borrowing” get replaced by “regrouping”– and why? Robert Berkman, who himself lived through five decades of math reform, will help demystify the teaching of modern mathematics in this hands-on, minds-on workshop. In addition to describing the current status of mathematics education, parents will have the opportunity to try out puzzles and games that will engage and amuse. This session is ideally suited for K – 6 parents looking for concrete and creative ways to experience mathematical thinking.
Facilitator:
Angelique LeDoux, founder of the P.A.L. Workshop Series and Jade’s ToyBox
Speaker:
Robert Berkman has been teaching mathematics for over 25 years in both private and public schools in New York City. His work has appeared in Teaching Children Mathematics and Mathematics in the Middle School, both published by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM.) He has given presentations at conferences sponsored by the NCTM and the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD), in addition to teaching graduate school courses at the Bank Street College of Education and New York University’s Steinhardt School of Education.
