Focus On Beit Rabban Elementary School

Beit Rabban is a Manhattan Jewish school with a strong academic curriculum starting with pre-kindergarten and going through eighth grade. The elementary school consists of kindergarten through fifth grade.

Students at Beit Rabban learn in small groups and as a class.

Faculty use a process called kevutzot for several curriculum areas, including math, Hebrew, Chumash, reading, and writing. Children learn that they are individuals with unique strengths as learning takes place within an integrated curriculum. Students participate in community services, develop important life skills, attend reading workshops, and engage with parents throughout the learning process.

Students decode words, dissect text, ask questions, listen to other people’s ideas, and interpret meaning of context for their lives.

Students learn to put studies from different disciplines together as faculty deliver the curriculum throughout the day, integrating Jewish studies with General Studies. They undertake subject-specific study as well as interdisciplinary study to learn how different ideas are connected. An important aspect of the study at Beit Rabban is textual study. Students deepen their understanding of tefillot as they interpret Parshah and study Megillah, Hagaddah, and holiday-related texts.

At Beit Rabban elementary school, students don’t just learn. They learn how to learn. As a result, they can enter middle school with stronger academic and study skills and a greater chance of success.

Started in 2002, Aaron School has built a solid reputation in Manhattan as a school focused on children with learning challenges. The high school curriculum picks up where the middle school left off and builds upon the basic blocks of learning started in elementary school.

Students learn to apply concepts learned in school to real world scenarios. The goal is to foster independence, provide for a greater breadth of post-secondary options for each student, and to assist them into growing into mature and responsible adults. The Aaron School provides a rigorous academic curriculum to help foster these goals.

Curriculum areas include:

  • English
  • History and Global Affairs
  • Spanish
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Library Media Studies
  • Health
  • Physical Arts
  • Visual Arts
  • and Culinary Lab

Students receive individualized instruction. Students also receive continuous individual assessments on a formal and informal basis.

Graduation requirements include 21 academic credits in English, Science, Mathematics, History, Computer Science, and Foreign Language. Students are also required to participate in a senior project that “connects their learning to our larger community.” There are additional program requirements for the arts, health education, community service, and Physical Arts.

Students get a healthy dose of critical thinking instruction infused into all subject areas.

QPSQueens Paideia School (QPS), known for its 6:1 student-teacher ratio and fully individualized education that emphasizes strong academics, thinking skills, and self-management skills, announces a Merit Scholarship program worth a total of $150,000. Students 13 and up are eligible to apply for the 2014-15/16 school year. The school is holding an Open House at 9:15 on December 18 for interested candidates and their parents/guardians.

Dr. Francis Mechner, director of QPS and president of the Mechner Foundation, founded the school “to provide the best possible–and most complete–education for children and to demonstrate the amazing results that an individualized education can deliver. We are funding the scholarship program to add seven promising students to our secondary school.” Selected applicants will be interviewed and evaluated on their abilities and personal qualities.

Queens Paideia School is an independent K-12 school located in Long Island City. Its highly regarded team of educators focuses detailed attention on every student. “We spotlight every student’s unique potentials and talents,” explains Mechner, “preparing them for college but also for a successful, fulfilling life.” Adds Dr. Tim Fredrick, QPS’s ELA instructor: “Our students learn to be critical thinkers and to ask questions of the world and themselves. That is what makes them stand out.”

Three $30,000 scholarships will cover the 2014-16 school years, and four $15,000 scholarships will cover the 2014-15 school year.

The Mechner Foundation has been supporting educational, scientific, and cultural activities since 1996. The Cooke Center for Learning & Development is a unique type of school for children with learning disabilities. They offer services for children from preschool through high school. The three primary programs are called:

  • Cooke Center Preschool
  • Cooke Center School
  • Cooke Center Institute

The Cooke Center Preschool is designed to offer support services for parents of children 2.7 to 5 years old. Diverse enough to provide educational services for all types of learners, Cooke Center is one of the most respected special education schools in Manhattan.

Rather than take special education children out of the regular schools and away from the normative experience of childhood education, Cooke Center takes its program into the classrooms to help children in their schools in Manhattan and Brooklyn. Assistance provided to students is targeted and addresses the individual needs of each student. The program is integrated and multi-disciplinary.

Cooke Center provides one-on-one instruction as well as child evaluations. They are able to consult with faculty at other schools to establish a curriculum and support that meets the needs of each student in the classroom. The curriculum is integrated into the classroom.

Cooke Center for Learning & Development has a unique approach to special education that has served the school, and students in Brooklyn and Manhattan, well for many years.

The Cooke Center for Learning and Development is based in Manhattan and provides educational opportunities for students with cognitive and learning disabilities. The grammar school serves children from kindergarten through eighth grade.

The school is located on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. The environment is structured to maximize opportunities for social and emotional development.

Faculty of the Cooke Center work as a team to deliver educational services to meet the needs of students. Learning disabilities fall into three categories at Cooke Center:

  • Mild-to-moderate cognitive disabilities
  • Mild-to-moderate developmental disabilities
  • Severe language-based disabilities

The classes are kept small, 8 to 12 students. Students get a balanced curriculum in a multi-disciplinary environment. The curriculum includes academics, life skills training, and social and emotional growth. Cooke Center also integrates plenty of social activities to facilitate peer-to-peer interaction.

On-site facilities include a science lab, an art studio, and a movement space. Students participate in yoga, adaptive physical education, music, and off-site educational experiences.

Another component of the Cooke Center Grammar School educational environment is the inclusion of parents in the learning experience. All instruction begins with student strength and weaknesses. From there, students experience a combination of instruction and therapy to help prepare them for upper school and life.

On December 18, 2013, the Abraham Joshua Heschel School board appointed a new head of the school. Ariela Dubler, currently serving as George Welwood Murray Professor of Legal History at Columbia Law School, will be the new headmistress effective July 1, 2014.

The decision was unanimous.

Roanna Shorofsky, the third head of the school, has been in the position for 24 years.

According to a press release distributed by the school, Ms. Shorofsky said, “I am enormously enthusiastic and excited that Ariela has accepted the position as Head of School. Having known Ariela for many years, I greatly admire and respect her intelligence, leadership skills, and passion for The Heschel School’s mission.”

The search for a new head of the school took eight months to complete. The search committee consisted of Abraham Joshua Heschel board members and non-board members, including members of the parents’ association. During the process, the committee engaged expert educational consultants and interviewed several dozens of candidates.

Professor Dubler is also a parent of three Heschel students and is a former member of the board of trustees. She is also active on other boards of trustees and with community service organizations.

President of the Heschel board of trustees said, “I am delighted the Board of the Heschel School has enthusiastically determined that Ariela Dubler, one of our own community, is the right person to guide our school forward into a new chapter and even brighter future. I believe we have successfully identified a true leader and champion of the Heschel mission, one who will inspire all of the Heschel community to dream more, learn more, do more, and become more.”

Here is the full press release.
